Digital X-Rays

Another one of the technological advances we offer in our office is digital radiography (X-rays). There are several benefits to you as a patient. Digital radiographs are faster and safer. They are also better diagnostically.

A sensor is placed in the mouth, and a computer generates an image in about 3 seconds, as opposed to the 4-6 minute wait time for developing dental films. With the sensitivity of the digital sensors, your radiation exposure is reduced between 70% and 90% when compared to the old style chemically processed x-ray films. Because the images are saved as a digital file we have the ability to use computer software to enhance the image by changing brightness and contrast or by superimposing various colors and textures. This technology combined with specific decay detecting software facilitates the earlier detection of decay. Studies have shown a 20% increase in the ability to detect decay that is present and needs treatment over dental film. Digital files can also been e-mailed to patients or other dental specialists. Lastly, digital x-rays are much more “green” or friendly to the environment as the hazardous developer and fixer used in a developing process has been eliminated.
